Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika Leads Protest Against Congress Leader Priyank Kharge’s Remarks on Semiconductor Project

On Tuesday, Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika, along with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers, held a massive protest rally in Jagiroad, Assam. They demanded an apology from Congress leader and Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge for his remarks on Assam’s semiconductor project.

Hazarika expressed his disappointment with Kharge’s tweets, which questioned why Assam had a semiconductor project instead of Karnataka. Hazarika stated, “I am an Indian and a nationalist. Karnataka should get development, but why should Assam not get it? We demand an apology from Priyank Kharge and the Congress party. Congress does not want the development of states.”

In a post on X, Hazarika wrote, “Today I joined the people of Jagiroad and my fellow BJP colleagues to protest against the Congress party and their opposition to Assam’s biggest ever private investment. Congress is anti-Assam and cannot digest the state’s development.”

On July 16, the Assam government handed over a state-owned land site in Morigaon to the Tata Group for setting up a mega semiconductor plant. The agreement, signed at the Sub-Registrar’s office in Morigaon, leases 517.27 bighas of land to Tata Group for 60 years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project on March 13, marking a technological milestone for Assam.

The Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) will establish a semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam, with a capacity to produce 48 million chips per day. The facility is being built for Rs 27,000 crore and will cover segments such as automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones.
