Karimganj (Assam), June 24: Assam Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika visited the flood-affected Karimganj district to assess the situation. As the guardian minister, he held a review meeting at the district commissioner’s office on Sunday.

During the meeting, the minister discussed the flood problems and the steps needed to control them. He announced the construction of 15-20 km of embankments in the district and directed the Water Resources Department to prepare a proper plan.

Discussions also covered shelter, food, and medical facilities for the flood victims. The minister instructed the authorities to provide all necessary services to the affected people regularly.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 111,184 people in Karimganj are still affected by the flood. The floods have also impacted nearly 6,000 people in Nagaon district, submerged 35 villages, and affected 1,089 hectares of crop area.

Many residents of the Changchaki area have been forced to leave their homes due to rising water levels. The Central Water Commission reported that the Kopili River is flowing above the danger level mark, causing similar problems in other areas.

Overall, nearly 3 lakh people in 19 districts have been affected by the floods, with more than 2.43 lakh people affected in Karimganj alone. The flood waters have submerged 3,326.31 hectares of crop area in the affected districts.
