Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria Talks About Devastating Floods in Assam

Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria reported that this year’s floods in Assam have been particularly severe, with 72 people losing their lives as of July 8. The floods have displaced over 27.74 lakh people and caused extensive damage to roads and infrastructure.

Governor Kataria mentioned that Assam faces flood-like situations almost every year due to the Brahmaputra River and other smaller rivers. He praised the cooperation between the people and authorities in dealing with the floods.

In Kaziranga National Park, 137 wild animals, including six rhinos, have died due to the floods. However, park authorities have managed to rescue 99 animals, including two rhino calves and two elephant calves. Unfortunately, 70 out of 233 forest camps in the park have been submerged.

The floods have affected 28 districts, including Goalpara, Nagaon, Nalbari, Kamrup, Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, South Salmara, Dhubri, Jorhat, Charaideo, Hojai, Karimganj, Sivasagar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Golaghat, Darrang, Biswanath, Cachar, Kamrup (M), Tinsukia, Karbi Anglong, Chirang, Karbi Anglong West, and Majuli.

Rescue teams from the NDRF, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services, local administration, Indian army, and paramilitary forces are actively engaged in rescue operations across the state. The floods have caused significant loss of life, damage to infrastructure, road closures, crop destruction, and livestock loss, leaving many people homeless and unsettled.
