Assam Floods Cause Vegetable Prices to Soar, Affecting Many

Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 13: The flood situation in Assam is improving, but people are facing problems due to rising vegetable prices. Traders say the floods have damaged crops, causing prices to increase as vegetables are now being brought in from outside the state.

Impact on Vegetable Prices

Ashok, a vegetable seller, mentioned that the flood has damaged many crops, leading to higher prices. He said, “All vegetable prices have increased due to the flood. The prices are increasing day by day. This also affects the common people, as well as the small traders.”

Nitya Biswas, another vegetable seller, also noted that the floods and rainfall have caused vegetable prices to soar.

Customer Concerns

Khalilur Rahman, a customer, expressed his concerns, saying, “We are common people who are facing lots of problems due to the hike of vegetable prices.”

Current Flood Situation

Although the flood situation is improving, over 12.33 lakh people in 24 districts are still affected. The flood waters have submerged more than 32,924 hectares of crop area. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that the total death toll has reached 90, with seven more deaths recently reported.

The affected districts include Cachar, Dhubri, Nagaon, Kamrup, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Nalbari, Barpeta, Dhemaji, Sivasagar, Goalpara, Jorhat, Morigaon, Lakhimpur, Karimganj, Darrang, Majuli, Biswanath, Hailakandi, Bongaigaon, South Salmara, Chirang, Tinsukia, and Kamrup (M).

Rivers and Water Levels

While the water levels of many rivers are receding, the Brahmaputra River is still flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat, Tezpur, Dhubri, Burhidihing River at Chenimari (Khowang), Disang River at Nanglamuraghat, and Kushiyara River at Karimganj.
