Assam Floods: 8 More Lives Lost, CM Sarma Visits Relief Camps

The situation in Assam has worsened as 8 people, including three children, drowned in floodwaters in the last 24 hours, raising this year’s flood death toll to 66. According to the ASDMA flood report, two people each died in Dhubri and Nalbari districts, and one each in Cachar, Goalpara, Dhemaji, and Sivasagar districts on Sunday.

Over 22.74 lakh people in 28 districts are still affected by the floods. The affected districts include Kamrup, Nagaon, Cachar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Morigaon, Hailakandi, Bongaigaon, South Salmara, Dibrugarh, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Nalbari, Charaideo, Biswanath, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Majuli, Kamrup (M), Darrang, Sivasagar, Chirang, and Tinsukia.

Currently, 3446 villages under 97 revenue circles are submerged, affecting 68432.75 hectares of crop area. Dhubri district alone has 754791 affected people, followed by 177928 in Cachar, 134328 in Barpeta, 117581 in Darrang, 112322 in Golaghat, and 100926 in South Salmara. More than 3.69 lakh people have taken shelter in 630 relief camps, and distribution centers have been set up in 26 districts.

The floods have also affected 1563426 domestic animals, washed away 214 animals, and damaged nearly 300 houses. Rescue teams from NDRF, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services, and local administration are actively engaged in rescue operations. The floodwaters have damaged 172 roads, 6 bridges, and 8 embankments in the last 24 hours. Nine rivers, including Brahmaputra and Barak, are flowing above the danger level at many places.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited flood relief camps in Kamrup district to assess the impact and oversee relief distribution. He interacted with displaced families and assured them of new houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). CM Sarma emphasized the importance of safety and hygiene in the relief camps and is gathering real-time feedback from the residents.
