Assam Floods: 72 People Lost, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Visits Relief Camps

In Assam, floods have claimed 72 lives, with six more deaths reported in the last 24 hours. On Sunday, eight people, including three children, drowned, raising the death toll to 66. The flood situation remains critical in several districts, affecting over 22.74 lakh people across 28 districts.

The affected districts include Kamrup, Nagaon, Cachar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Morigaon, Hailakandi, Bongaigaon, South Salmara, Dibrugarh, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Nalbari, Charaideo, Biswanath, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Majuli, Kamrup (M), Darrang, Sivasagar, Chirang, and Tinsukia. A total of 3446 villages under 97 revenue circles are submerged, affecting 68432.75 hectares of crop area.

In Dhubri district alone, 754791 people are affected, followed by 177928 in Cachar, 134328 in Barpeta, 117581 in Darrang, 112322 in Golaghat, and 100926 in South Salmara. More than 3.69 lakh people have taken shelter in 630 relief camps, and distribution centers have been set up in 26 districts. The floods have also affected 1563426 domestic animals, washed away 214 animals, and damaged nearly 300 houses.

Rescue teams from NDRF, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services, and local administration are actively engaged in rescue operations. The flood waters have damaged 172 roads, 6 bridges, and 8 embankments in the last 24 hours. Nine rivers, including the Brahmaputra and Barak, are flowing above danger levels at many places.

In Guwahati, the water level of the Brahmaputra River is receding. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited flood relief camps in Kamrup district to assess the impact and oversee relief distribution. He interacted with displaced families and assured them of new houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). He emphasized the importance of safety and hygiene in the camps and instructed his team to gather real-time feedback from the residents.
