Assam Floods: 58 Lives Lost and Thousands Affected
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Visits Affected Areas
The state of Assam in India has been severely affected by floods over the past month, resulting in the loss of 58 lives, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). On Saturday, six more people lost their lives, raising the death toll from 52 to 58.
Worst-Hit Districts
Dhubri is the worst-hit district, followed by Cachar and Darrang. The floods have caused extensive damage to infrastructure, road closures, crop destruction, and livestock loss. Hundreds of people have been left homeless.
Impact on People and Animals
Over 2.396 million people in 29 districts are affected by the second wave of floods. Dhubri has 797,918 affected people, followed by 175,231 in Cachar and 163,218 in Darrang. The floodwaters have submerged 3,535 villages and inundated 68,768.5 hectares of crop area. Over 526,000 people are taking shelter in 577 relief camps across 27 districts. Additionally, 1,549,161 animals have been affected, and 114 wild animals, including six rhinos, have died in Kaziranga National Park.
Government Response
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the Jyotinagar area in Guwahati and met the parents of Abinash Sarkar, who went missing after falling into a drain. He extended his condolences and directed search teams to intensify their efforts. The Chief Minister also visited Dibrugarh town to review the flood situation and interacted with residents and experts to find solutions.
