Assam Floods: 52 Dead, Over 21 Lakh Affected, and Wildlife Impacted
The flood situation in Assam is very serious. A total of 52 people have died, and about 21.13 lakh people are affected in 29 districts due to the second wave of floods. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 6 people died in the last 24 hours, raising the total death toll to 52. More than 3.86 lakh people are taking shelter in 515 relief camps and distribution centers set up by the administration in 24 flood-hit districts.
The floods have also affected 11,20,165 animals. The number of affected villages has risen to 3,208. In Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNP), 31 wild animals have died, including 23 hog deer that drowned and 7 that died under care.
The flood-affected districts include Goalpara, Nagaon, Nalbari, Kamrup, Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, South Salmara, Dhubri, Jorhat, Charaideo, Hojai, Karimganj, Sivasagar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Golaghat, Darrang, Biswanath, Cachar, Kamrup (M), Tinsukia, Karbi Anglong, Chirang, Karbi Anglong West, and Majuli.
In Morigaon district, more than 55,000 people are affected, and 194 villages are still submerged. Many villagers, like Chandini Devi and Dipen Deka, are living in makeshift tents on embankments and roads after floodwaters entered their homes.
Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora visited the flood-affected areas in Morigaon district and interacted with the people. He mentioned that the water level of the Brahmaputra River is receding, but the situation remains grim. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also visited flood-affected areas in the state capital and directed the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority to take measures to drain the floodwater.
The Indian Army is actively involved in flood relief operations in the villages of Sivaguri in Dhemaji District. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi criticized the BJP government for repeatedly giving embankment projects to the same contractors who build faulty embankments.
