Assam Congress Leader Bhupen Kumar Borah Summoned by Income Tax Department

The Income Tax Department has called upon Bhupen Kumar Borah, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), to present financial documents at Aayakar Bhawan in Guwahati on August 16. This summons is part of proceedings under the Income Tax Act 1961.

An official release from the Income Tax Department stated, “You are hereby required to attend Aayakar Bhawan, Guwahati on August 16, 2024, to give evidence or to produce either personally or through an authorized representative the books of account or other documents specified below and not to depart until you receive my permission to do so.”

The release also warned that a penalty of Rs 10,000 could be imposed for each instance of non-compliance under section 272 (1)(c) of the Income Tax Act, 1961.

Earlier, on August 11, Bhupen Kumar Borah announced that the APCC would hold a crucial meeting in the first week of September to strengthen the party and discuss upcoming bye-elections for five assembly constituencies and panchayat polls in the state. He mentioned that various initiatives have been taken to strengthen the party.

Regarding the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls for two seats in Assam, Borah said that the party currently lacks enough MLAs in the state assembly to win the election. He added, “If anyone will come and desire to contest in the Rajya Sabha polls, then we may think about this. But as of now, no one has come forward.”
