Assam Congress Files FIR Against CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Over ‘Miya Muslim’ Remarks
Guwahati, Assam – The Congress-led United Opposition Forum in Assam has filed an FIR against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of promoting enmity between different groups based on religion and race. The FIR was lodged at Dispur Police Station in Guwahati by a delegation led by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhupen Kumar Borah and Assam Jatiya Parishad President Lurinjyoti Gogoi.
Accusations Against the Chief Minister
Bhupen Kumar Borah accused CM Sarma of inciting communal violence through his speeches and demanded his dismissal. Borah stated, “Eighteen political parties forming the opposition in Assam have filed an FIR against CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. Since the Lok Sabha election results on June 4, 2024, he has been trying to incite communal violence.”
He added, “The assembly envoy is also doing the same thing. The Chief Minister of Assam should be suspended. I will also request the President of India to dismiss him from his post. He should be suspended and arrested immediately.”
Controversial Remarks
CM Sarma’s statement, “I won’t let Assam become a land of Miyas,” has sparked controversy. Borah criticized Sarma, saying, “He doesn’t talk about the land or soil of the people of Assam, he only talks about his family’s land.”
Additional Allegations
The opposition also accused BJP leader Mayur Borgohain of physically assaulting laborers. The FIR mentions, “The entire Assam is erupting in anger against the dastardly act of rape committed on a young lady from Dhing. The accused person is trying to whip up communal frenzy by targeting a particular community.”
Opposition’s Stand
AIUDF MLA Mujibur Rahman stated, “We will continue our fight for the Miya people’s rights. In a democratic country, why can’t people move from one state to another? The Assam Chief Minister has failed to address this matter. We demand that he should resign.”
