Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sharma Responds to Mamata Banerjee’s Remarks on Bengal Violence

Kamrup Metropolitan (Assam) [India], August 28: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma has responded strongly to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s recent comments. Banerjee had warned that violence in Bengal could spread to other states, including Assam, in response to the rape and murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata.

In a post on X, Sharma said, “Didi, how dare you threaten Assam? Don’t show us red eyes. Don’t even try to burn India with your politics of failure. It does not suit you to speak divisive language.”

Earlier, Banerjee had accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using his party to incite violence in Bengal and warned that if Bengal burns, other states like Assam, North-East, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi would also face unrest.

The brutal rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has led to widespread outrage and protests across the country. The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum held a protest rally in Kolkata, demanding justice for the victim. The rally coincided with the BJP’s call for a 12-hour Bangla Bandh across West Bengal, highlighting the need for improved safety measures and swift justice.

Protests have also taken place in Asansol, where BJP workers blocked railway tracks. On August 27, security personnel used tear gas, water cannons, and lathi-charge to disperse protestors on the Howrah Bridge marching towards the West Bengal State Secretariat Nabanna.

On August 25, Parimal Dey, a teacher from Alipurduar in West Bengal who was honored with the Banga Ratna award by Banerjee in 2019, decided to return the award in protest against the state government’s handling of the incident.

The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
