Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Vows to Protect State Amid Controversy

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared in the state assembly that he will not allow ‘Miya Muslim’ to take over Assam. This statement came during a discussion on law and order following a gang rape incident involving a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon district.

Speaking in the state assembly, Sarma said, “I won’t let Assam become a land of Miyas.” He questioned the opposition, asking, “Are you want to capture the entire state? Why the people from Lower Assam will go to Upper Assam? I won’t let Assam become a land of Miyas.”

AIUDF MLA Mujibur Rahman criticized the Chief Minister, asserting that his party will continue to fight for the rights of Miya Muslims. Rahman said, “We will continue our fights for the Miya people’s rights. In a democratic country why people can’t go to one state from another state or from one district to another district? The Assam Chief Minister who is also holding the Home Department portfolio, has failed to address this matter. We demand that he should resign from the post. Both Congress and BJP are doing communal politics.”

Earlier, on August 22, a minor girl was allegedly gang-raped in Assam’s Nagaon district, leading to the arrest of two individuals, according to the police. The incident reportedly occurred while the girl was returning home from tuition in the Dhing area. Locals found the girl in a semi-conscious state by the roadside and immediately admitted her to a hospital. Swapnaneel Deka, Superintendent of Police of Nagaon district, said, “Police have picked up two persons for interrogation in connection with the incident.”

This incident comes amid nationwide outrage over the murder and alleged sexual assault of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 in Kolkata.
