Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Vows Justice for Minor Girl in Dhing Incident

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has promised strict action following the alleged gang rape of a minor girl in Dhing, Assam. The incident, which occurred on August 22, has led to the arrest of two suspects and sparked protests.

Addressing the media, Sarma said, “When there is any atrocity against women, we need to take prompt action. But the public should see that the government is taking strict action. When people feel that the government is showing laxity, they get angry. When such incidents take place, the government should take very aggressive action.”

He further stated that after the Lok Sabha elections this year, “we are seeing a specific community of people indulging in criminal activities.”

Earlier on Thursday, a minor girl was allegedly gang-raped in Assam’s Nagaon district and two people had been arrested in connection with the incident, the police said. The alleged incident took place when the girl was on her way home from tuition class on August 22 in the Dhing area. According to reports, locals found the girl in a semi-conscious state by the side of a road and immediately admitted her to a hospital.

Swapnaneel Deka, Superintendent of Police of Nagaon district, said, “Police have picked up two persons for interrogation in connection with the incident. Our investigation is on. We are now waiting for the doctor’s report.”

The incident has sparked massive protests in the area, with locals demanding stern action against the perpetrators of the crime and justice for the victim. Following the incident, several organisations on Friday called a local bandh (strike) in Dhing area.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the horrific incident at Dhing, involving a minor, “is a crime against humanity and has struck our collective conscience.” The Assam CM also directed the state DGP to visit the site and ensure swift action against the perpetrators. “We will NOT SPARE anyone and BRING the perpetrators to JUSTICE,” Sarma wrote on X.

This comes amid nationwide outrage over the murder and alleged sexual assault of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 in Kolkata.
