Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Signs MoU with Visva Bharati University to Promote Srimanta Sankardeva’s Teachings

The Assam Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Visva Bharati University to establish the Srimanta Sankardeva Chair. This initiative aims to promote the study and research of Srimanta Sankardeva’s Bhakti Movement beyond Assam and India.

The MoU was signed by Madhu Sudan Nath, Secretary of Higher Education of the Assam government, and Ashok Kumar Mahato, Registrar of Visva Bharati University. The signing event took place at Janata Bhawan in Guwahati and was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Chief Minister Sarma expressed his gratitude to Visva Bharati University and its Vice Chancellor for partnering with the Assam Government. He highlighted that Srimanta Sankardeva’s teachings have united people by transcending caste identities and emphasized the importance of studying and researching his philosophies.

Sarma also announced that the Assam Government would provide a one-time grant of Rs 5 crore for the establishment of the chair. The Srimanta Sankardeva Chair will also be set up at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Punjab University, and two other prominent universities across India, making a total of five chairs.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Vice Chancellor of Visva Bharati University Arabinda Mondal, and Vice Chancellors from other universities.
