Ranchi (Jharkhand) [India], September 1: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responded to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav’s comments against him. Sarma stated, “Our work will not stop based on the comments of people. Our work is to keep going forward.”

Tejashwi Yadav had criticized Sarma for ending the 2-hour break for Jumma prayers in the Assam assembly, accusing him of seeking “cheap popularity” to stay in the news. Yadav said, “Assam Chief Minister (Himanta Biswa Sarma) wants cheap popularity and wants to remain in the news… (UP CM) Yogi Adityanath is using bulldozers, and he (Assam CM) is stopping namaz, the country belongs to everyone, there should be peace, but these people are only spreading hatred.”

Yadav also called Sarma the “Chinese version of Yogi” in a veiled reference to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He accused Sarma of harassing Muslims to gain popularity and polarize society. Yadav added, “People of all religions, except RSS, have a hand in the independence of the country. Our Muslim brothers have made sacrifices in getting the country freedom and as long as we are here, no one can harm them.”

RJD MP Manoj Jha supported Tejashwi Yadav, explaining that the term “Chinese maal” means something not durable and was used in the context of dog-whistle politics. Jha questioned the dignity of words used by others, asking, “Where do you place ‘bhains’, ‘mangalsutra’ and ‘mujra’?”

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticized Tejashwi Yadav’s comments, saying, “Tejashwi Yadav said that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is the ‘Chinese version’ just because he was born in Assam. Has Sam Pitroda’s spirit entered Tejashwi Yadav?… It is the character of the INDI alliance to not respect the Constitution and insult every person.”
