Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Reveals Huge Drug Seizures and Arrests
Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared important information about the state’s efforts to combat drug trafficking. From April 2016 to July 2024, the Assam Police seized:
- 7,206 kg of heroin
- 445 kg of brown sugar
- 742 kg of opium
- 1.302 lakh kg of ganja
- 54 kg of poppy seed
- 771,254 capsules
- 89.97 lakh tablets
- 89 bottles of codsure syrup
- 9.107 lakh bottles of Phensedyl cough linctus
- 1.49 kg of cocaine
- 21.97 kg of syabu crystal methamphetamine
- 6.47 lakh bottles of cough syrup
- 83 kg of morphine
- 113 kg of Afing seeds
- 59.39 lakh yaba tablets
- 412.52 kg of cannabis
During this period, over 20,000 people were arrested, with around 17,000 released from jail. The CM also mentioned that between 2011 and 2016, 1,334 people were arrested, with 1,097 released from jail.
Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the state’s efforts to fight against drugs and increase awareness among students and the public. He also mentioned the establishment of new regional Forensic Science Laboratories in Dibrugarh, Bongaigaon, Tezpur, and Silchar.
