Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Orders Inspection of Finance Schemes and Ends Jumma Break in Assembly

The Assam government has directed all district commissioners to inspect and verify all schemes under the 15th Finance Commission. This decision follows allegations of financial anomalies in Morigaon district. Dr. JB Ekka, Principal Secretary of Panchayat and Rural Development Department, issued the order on Friday.

Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass stated, “In order to ensure that the schemes taken up under the 15th Finance Commission are implemented as per approved plan and estimates, it has been decided that, henceforth, all the schemes under the 15th Finance Commission will be inspected/verified by the respective District Commissioners for the period w.e.f. 2021-22 upto 2023-24.”

After verification, district commissioners are required to submit detailed reports to the Principal Secretary for review. This order is effective immediately.

Additionally, Congress MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar raised concerns about financial anomalies in Morigaon district in the Assam assembly on Friday.

End of Jumma Break in Assam Legislative Assembly

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the end of the 2-hour Jumma prayer break in the state legislative assembly. He stated that this decision was made collectively by the assembly to prioritize productivity and remove a colonial practice introduced in 1937 by Muslim League’s Syed Saadulla.

CM Sarma expressed gratitude to Speaker Biswajit Daimary and the legislators for this historical decision. The assembly rules committee, which includes members from the minority community, also supported this change.
