Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Launches Nagarik Samitis to Improve Community Policing
Guwahati (Assam), September 7: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a conference of 307 Thana level ‘Nagarik Samitis’ at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati. These Samitis, consisting of citizens and police representatives, aim to bridge the gap between the public and the police.
Role of Nagarik Samitis
CM Sarma emphasized that the Nagarik Samitis should assist crime victims, especially children and women, and build public awareness on legal procedures. He praised the Assam Police for their efforts in implementing the 2022 decision on Nagarik Samitis.
Police Modernization
CM Sarma highlighted the modernization of Assam Police, including new appointments and improved forensic facilities, which have reduced crime rates and expedited justice. He also mentioned the Sewa Setu Portal, which has provided services to over 1,91,408 people.
Community Engagement
The Chief Minister urged the Nagarik Samitis to engage in community activities and collaborate with local MLAs and MPs for small-scale infrastructure developments. He stressed the importance of a positive mindset and collective effort for societal change.
Future Plans
CM Sarma announced that a meeting would be held on October 2 to mark the start of the newly formed Nagarik Samitis. Chairpersons will receive a monthly honorarium of Rs 5,000, and non-official members will receive Rs 250 per meeting. Police superintendents will engage with chairpersons every six months, and a comprehensive handbook for the Samitis will be developed.
He also called for the flag hoisting on Independence Day to be done by the chairpersons of the Nagarik Samitis and announced an SP conference in Dergaon in mid-October to showcase their efforts. Dedicated funding will be provided to support the effective functioning of these Samitis.
