Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Discusses Clause 6 of Assam Accord with AASU

On Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a meeting with the All Assam Students Union (AASU) to discuss the recommendations of the Justice (Retd) Biplab Sarma Committee regarding Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

Clause 6 aims to protect, preserve, and promote the cultural, social, and linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people through appropriate safeguards.

CM Sarma stated that the state government will not implement Clause 6 in Barak Valley and 6th schedule areas without their consent. He also mentioned that the state will request the Centre to discuss 15 recommendations with AASU and aims to implement 52 recommendations by April 15 next year.

A second phase of the meeting with AASU is scheduled for October 25.

Justice (Retd) Biplab Sarma Committee -: This is a committee led by retired Justice Biplab Sarma. The committee was formed to give recommendations on how to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

6th schedule areas -: 6th schedule areas are regions in India that have special provisions for the administration of tribal areas. These areas have a certain degree of autonomy.
