Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Declares August 20 as Sootea Day to Honor Freedom Fighters

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that August 20 will be celebrated as Sootea Day to honor the region’s role in India’s freedom movement. The Chief Minister stated that the people of Sootea have been observing this historic day, and now it will be officially recognized and celebrated with government support.

Earlier in the day, CM Sarma visited Sootea Police Station in Biswanath District and paid tribute to the bravehearts who hoisted the national flag there in 1942. He emphasized Sootea’s significant contribution to the freedom movement, recalling how people, led by late Biman Chandra Bora, hoisted the national flag at the police station on August 20, 1942.

CM Sarma also announced the construction of a heritage monument at the historic site of Sootea Police Station, with a budget of Rs 5 crore. The project will include a garden and statues of the leaders who played a crucial role in the freedom movement. The announcement was made in the presence of MP Ranjit Dutta, MLA Padma Hazarika, Principal Secretary B Kalyan Chakravarthy, and ADGP Munna Prasad.
