Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrashekhar performed the ‘bhumi pujan’ for a new semiconductor facility in Jagiroad. The event marks a significant step towards making Assam a global electronic hub.
In a post on social media platform ‘X’, CM Sarma expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his vision that propelled this development. He also thanked Ratan Tata, emeritus chairman of Tata Sons, and IT and Information Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for their determination and support.
CM Sarma stated, “Proud! Assam is set to become the next global electronic hub. With the blessings of Maa Kamakhya, Srimanta Sankardev, and our people, I performed the Bhumi Pujan of the Tata Semiconductor facility in Jagiroad along with Chairman of Tata Sons, Shri N Chandrashekhar.”
The Rs 27,000 crore plant is expected to create over 27,000 jobs and attract a world-class industrial ecosystem, boosting India’s quest to become a global leader in new-age technology. The government has approved Tata Electronics’ proposal to build this state-of-the-art, greenfield semiconductor assembly and test facility.
According to Tata Group, the facility will focus on three key platform technologies: Wire Bond, Flip Chip, and Integrated Systems Packaging (ISP), with plans to expand to advanced packaging technologies in the future. This project will benefit industries such as automotive, especially the electric vehicle industry, communications, and network infrastructure.
The construction of the facility will start this year, with the first phase expected to be operational by mid-2025. The project is part of the Government of India’s Semiconductor policy and the Government of Assam’s Electronics policy.
