Assam CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma Unveils Statue of Freedom Fighter Bishnu Ram Medhi in Hajo
On Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled a statue of Bishnu Ram Medhi, a notable freedom fighter, social reformer, and former Chief Minister of Assam, at Bharalitola in Hajo. Medhi, often called the Iron Man of Assam, was also the first Assamese Governor.
Significant Contributions of Bishnu Ram Medhi
During the event, Dr. Sarma highlighted Medhi’s contributions, which have inspired generations of Assamese people. He thanked the committee members and residents of Hajo for their support in making the statue a reality.
Dr. Sarma mentioned that Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi dreamed of peace and harmony among all sections of Assam’s people and laid the groundwork for a developed Assam. Medhi continued Bordoloi’s work, showing exceptional dedication by transforming challenges into accomplishments. He worked tirelessly to expel illegal immigrants and donated all his savings to the people of Assam before his death.
Medhi’s Role in Legislation and Development
Medhi played a crucial role in opposing the rehabilitation policy for migrants and took decisive legal action to remove illegal occupiers. He amended the Assam Land Revenue Act to protect tribal communities and shaped significant public welfare legislation. Under his leadership, projects like the Brahmaputra bridge, Umkru Hydropower Project, and Guwahati Refinery were initiated.
Medhi also combated drug abuse, empowered women, supported khadi, promoted local products, and advocated the boycott of foreign goods during the freedom struggle. He played a key role in exposing the injustices of the colonial government during the Non-Cooperation Movement.
Future Plans and Memorials
Dr. Sarma announced that a new bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Palasbari and Sualkuchi would be named in Medhi’s honor. He also approved funding for a memorial compound and mentioned a proposal to rename the Guwahati railway station after Medhi.
The event was attended by MLA Suman Haripriya, Bandana Deka (Medhi’s granddaughter), District Commissioner of Kamrup Keerthi Jalli, and other distinguished guests.
Other Initiatives by the Chief Minister
Dr. Sarma also visited the Nabagraha Crematorium in Guwahati, dedicating part of the redevelopment and beautification project. He directed the PWD to ensure the project’s completion within the stipulated timeframe and assured that funds would not be a constraint.
Additionally, Dr. Sarma inspected the progress of the Gopinath Bordoloi Memorial adjacent to the crematorium and assured all assistance to complete the project according to the family’s wishes. The event was attended by GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania, GMC Commissioner Megha Nidhi Dahal, and other officials.
