Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Updates PM Modi on Flood Relief Efforts
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the relief measures taken by the state government after floods claimed 34 lives, including two children. The floods were caused by heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh and upper Assam districts.
Sarma shared on his official X handle, ‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi called me to enquire about the flood situation in Assam. I explained that Assam is experiencing a second wave of floods this year due to heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh and upper Assam districts. I also briefed him about the relief measures undertaken by the state government. He assured me of full cooperation from the Government of India in this hour of crisis.’
The death toll rose to 34 with the deaths of two children in the Dhemaji district. Sarma also mentioned, ‘We are continuously monitoring the situation in Dibrugarh. Our administration is taking all necessary measures and stands firmly with the people of Dibrugarh and other affected areas in this hour of crisis.’
Meanwhile, the floodwaters of the Brahmaputra River entered Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, inundating 61 out of 233 camps. Sonali Ghosh, Field Director of Kaziranga National Park, reported that the floodwaters submerged 22 forest camps in the Agoratoli range, 10 in the Kaziranga range, 8 in the Bagori range, 5 in the Burapahar range, 6 in the Bokakhat range, and 10 in the Biswanath Wildlife Division. Measures have been taken for the safety and security of wild animals, including the installation of speed sensor cameras on National Highway 37 and increased deployment of forest guards.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also posted about the flood situation, stating, ‘Spoke to Assam CM Himanta Biswa over the phone regarding the flood situation in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, and other parts of the state. Requested him to provide all necessary assistance to the flood victims.’ He added, ‘The CM assured immediate relief to the affected people.’
Sonowal further mentioned that he spoke to the Chief Secretary of Assam, District Collector Dibrugarh, MLA Prasanta Phukan, Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Ward Councillors, and other officials to review the situation. ‘In view of the flood in Dibrugarh town, took stock of the conditions and directed officials to take immediate measures to mitigate the situation,’ he said. The Union Minister was updated on various efforts undertaken by the government to minimize the impact of the floods on daily life.
