On Saturday, Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, visited the Durga Puja Pandal at Guwahati University to celebrate Dussehra. He offered prayers and expressed his hopes for Assam’s growth and prosperity. In a post on X, he shared, “On the occasion of #MahaNavami, I offer my heartfelt prayers to Maa Durga. May she give us the strength to take Assam to new heights of growth and prosperity.”

Traditional Celebrations in Assam

Ethnic folk dramas like Kamrupia and Kaihati Dhulia have become a significant part of Durga Puja celebrations in Assam, especially in the lower divisions. These performances, which include dance, drama, music, and circus, are popular in districts such as Kamrup, Goalpara, Barpeta, and Nalbari. The Dhulia, known for playing various sizes of drums, perform their art in the puja pandals.

Government Initiatives to Preserve Culture

Assam Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass highlighted the government’s efforts to preserve and promote Assam’s ethnic and indigenous culture. He emphasized the importance of Dhulia Dance, a traditional ancient culture, and mentioned that artists use their performances to convey messages to society. The government supports programs for Dhulia, puppet dance, and Ojapali to maintain these ancient traditions. Over 70 Durga Puja pandals are in Barpeta and Bajali, showcasing these cultural performances.
