Asitha Fernando Replaces Injured Dushmantha Chameera for Sri Lanka’s Series Against India

Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando will be stepping in for the injured Dushmantha Chameera in the upcoming home white-ball series against India, starting from July 27. Chameera has been ruled out due to bronchitis and a respiratory infection.

On Tuesday, Sri Lanka announced their T20I squad for the series. Sri Lanka’s chief selector, Upul Tharanga, confirmed that Chameera will miss both the T20I and ODI series. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) also confirmed this on X, stating, “Dushmantha Chameera is still recovering from a bronchitis and respiratory infection he contracted, and hence will not be part of the T20I series. Asitha Fernando joins the squad in place of Chameera. #SLvIND.”

Earlier this month, Chameera played for the Kandy Falcons in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024. India’s tour of Sri Lanka will start on July 27 with a three-match T20I series, followed by a three-match ODI series starting on August 2. Both teams will have new head coaches. Sanath Jayasuriya will be the interim head coach for Sri Lanka, and Gautam Gambhir will take on his first assignment as India’s head coach, succeeding Rahul Dravid.

India’s last tour of Sri Lanka for a bilateral white-ball series was in July 2021, where India won the ODI series 2-1, and Sri Lanka won the T20I series by the same margin.
