Indian Government Enhances Working Conditions for Loco Pilots
Commitment to Safety and Efficiency
The Central Government of India is dedicated to improving the working conditions of loco pilots, who are crucial for the safe and efficient movement of passengers and goods on Indian Railways. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, shared these updates in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
Working Hours and Compensation
Loco pilots are classified under the continuous category, with duty hours averaging 52 hours over a two-week period, as per the Hours of Work and Period of Rest (HOER) guidelines. They are also compensated for extra working hours according to the Railway Act, 1989.
Improved Facilities
Since 2014, 7,286 three-phase locomotives with ergonomic designs have been manufactured, compared to only 719 before 2014. All new locomotives since 2017-18 come with air-conditioned cabs, and over 7,000 locomotives have been equipped with air conditioners.
Technological Aids
More than 12,000 locomotives have been fitted with Vigilance Control Devices (VCD) to alert loco pilots in case of loss of alertness. Additionally, 21,742 GPS-based Fog Safe Devices (FSD) have been provided to help pilots navigate through foggy conditions.
Training and Support
Simulator-based training has been emphasized to improve driving skills and reaction times. A mobile app named ‘Chalak Dal’ was updated in 2023 to help crew members access important documents and details related to their duties. Regular safety drives and counseling programs are also conducted to ensure the alertness and safety awareness of the running staff.
