Asaduddin Owaisi and Congress Leaders Oppose ‘One Nation, One Election’ Proposal
New Delhi, India – The ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal has faced opposition from several political leaders. AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi criticized the proposal, stating it undermines federalism and democracy, which are fundamental to the Constitution. He argued that multiple elections enhance democratic accountability and that the proposal is only beneficial to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also opposed the proposal, calling it impractical and a political gimmick. He suggested that the proposal is a distraction tactic used by the ruling party ahead of elections.
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate echoed these sentiments, claiming the proposal is an attempt to divert attention from the government’s failures. Rajasthan Congress President Govind Singh Dotasra added that the government lacks the majority needed to amend the law for implementing the proposal.
Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa pointed out the inconsistency of the government’s stance, noting that elections in Jammu and Kashmir are being held in three phases while advocating for simultaneous elections.
Despite the opposition, the Union Cabinet approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, which suggests holding simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, along with urban body and panchayat polls within 100 days. The proposal, based on recommendations from a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, will be implemented in two phases.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the proposal aims to create a consensus on issues affecting democracy and the nation. The committee’s report highlighted the benefits of simultaneous elections, such as increased voter turnout and reduced economic and social disruptions.
The proposal will be tabled in Parliament and must be approved by both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to become law.
