Arvind Kejriwal Steps Down as Delhi Chief Minister, Successor to be Announced Today
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is set to announce the new Delhi Chief Minister by 12 pm today after a legislative meeting at the current Chief Minister’s residence. Following this, Arvind Kejriwal will meet Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at 4:30 p.m. to stake a claim for the new leader.
Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj mentioned that the successor could be either a current minister or an MLA. He emphasized that the mandate was for Arvind Kejriwal, and the public chose him. Bharadwaj added, “One of us will sit on the chair until the elections take place. It will be similar to the way Bharat ruled in the absence of Lord Ram.”
Kejriwal announced his resignation on Sunday, stating he would not resume the CM’s post until the people of Delhi declared him “honest.” He has called for advancing polls in the national capital to November this year, ahead of the scheduled February elections. Kejriwal said that if re-elected, it would serve as a “certificate” of his honesty.
The announcement came two days after Kejriwal was released from Tihar jail, having been granted bail by the Supreme Court in a corruption case related to the alleged Delhi Excise Policy scam. The court imposed conditions on his release, including refraining from public comments about the case and attending all trial court hearings unless exempted.
