Arunachal Pradesh Wins First-Ever Assam Rifles Women’s Football Tournament

The Assam Rifles organized the first-ever Assam Rifles Annual Women’s Football Tournament, known as the Sentinels Cup, for teams from North East India. Seven teams from Meghalaya, Assam, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Assam Rifles participated.

The tournament began on June 30 at Lokra, Assam, with an opening ceremony attended by the Governor of Assam, Gulab Chand Kataria. The semifinals saw Assam Rifles face Nagaland and Assam compete against Arunachal Pradesh. The final match was between Assam Rifles and Arunachal Pradesh, with Arunachal Pradesh emerging as the winner after a thrilling game that went into extra time.

The event was sponsored by State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, and IndusInd Bank. Lt Gen P C Nair, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, and DG Assam Rifles graced the final match. Assam Rifles aims to promote sports to motivate youth to stay away from insurgency and drugs and to identify talent in the North East. They also have a partnership with the Bhaichung Bhutia Football Academy to boost initiatives like Khelo India Abhiyan and Fit India Movement.
