Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh) [India], September 6: Tapir Gao, a Member of Parliament from Arunachal Pradesh, has called for the 17th Karmapa to return to India to support Buddhism and Tibetans in the country. Gao, along with Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and other state leaders, visited the Gyuto Tantrik Monastery in Dharamshala on Thursday.

Many leaders expressed their wish for the 17th Karmapa, Urgyen Trinley Dorjee, to come back to India. The Karmapa left India in 2017 and became a citizen of the Dominican Republic. After obtaining Dominican citizenship, he applied for an Indian visa in 2018, which was denied.

Recently, the 17th Karmapa met the Dalai Lama in Zurich, Switzerland, on August 25, marking their first meeting since the Karmapa left India. In an interview, Tapir Gao said, “I am praying for his (Karmapa’s) good health and long life and he should be back to India to Dharamshala and look after this institution for the well-being of Buddhism and Tibetans in India and pass a message for peace and tranquillity all over the world.”

Gao added that he believes the Indian government will address the Karmapa’s visa issue. Lobsang Dorjee, the administrator of Gyuto Monastery, also expressed the desire for the Karmapa to return, noting that all directors and students of the monastery wish for his return.

The 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, Urgyen Trinley Dorje, is the head of the 900-year-old Karma Kagyu Lineage and a guide to millions of Buddhists worldwide. Born in 1985, he resided at Gyuto Monastery in India after escaping from Tibet in 2000.
