Indian Para Taekwondo athlete Aruna Tanwar faced a tough match in the K44-47 kg women’s category at the Paris Paralympics. She played against Turkey’s Nurcihan Ekinci and lost 0-19. Despite suffering an injury during the match, Aruna showed great determination by continuing to play. However, her journey at the Paralympics ended in the round of 16.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) Media praised her spirit, tweeting, ‘Aruna Tanwar suffers a shattering injury in her match but still gets up to fight back. She gives her best before losing to Turkey’s Nurcihan Ekinci with a 0-19 scoreline. With this, Aruna’s journey at the Paris Paralympics 2024 comes to an end. But what a spirit shown, champ!’

India’s Para-Badminton Campaign

In para-badminton, the Indian mixed doubles team of Nitesh Kumar and Thulasimathi Murugesan won against Suhas Yathiraj and Palak Kohli with a score of 2-0, winning both games 21-14 and 21-17.

However, India’s campaign in women’s singles SL3 Group Stage had a rough start. Manasi Joshi, a World Championships 2019 gold medalist, lost to Indonesia’s Qontiah Ikhitar Syakuroh despite winning the first game. The final score was 21-16, 13-21, 18-21. Mandeep Kaur also faced defeat against Nigeria’s Mariam Eniola Bolaji, losing 8-21 and 14-21.

India’s Largest Paralympics Contingent

This year, India has sent its largest Paralympics contingent ever, with 84 athletes competing in 12 sports. This marks a significant increase in both participation and medal hopes. In the previous Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, India achieved its best performance, winning 19 medals, including five golds, eight silvers, and six bronzes.
