Anupriya Patel Highlights Importance of Organ Donation
14th Indian Organ Donation Day Ceremony
On August 3, Anupriya Patel, the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, spoke about the importance of organ donation at the 14th Indian Organ Donation Day ceremony organized by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) in New Delhi. She encouraged people to donate their organs after death to save lives and improve the quality of life for many.
Recognition and Awards
During the event, Patel honored 10 family members of deceased donors and four organ recipients. Awards were also given to the best performing states, medical institutions, and professionals in the field of organ donation and transplantation.
Support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Patel praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for emphasizing the importance of organ donation, noting that one donor can save up to eight lives. She also mentioned that countries like Spain, the USA, and China are ahead in organ donation, but India has made significant progress.
Dr. VK Paul’s Address
Dr. VK Paul, Member (Health) of NITI Aayog, highlighted the gap between the demand and supply of organs and called for more institutions to offer organ transplantation services. He mentioned that kidney transplantation is covered under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and urged insurance companies to cover organ transplantation.
Union Health Secretary’s Remarks
Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra stressed the need to raise awareness about organ donation, noting that India ranks third in organ transplantation, mostly within families. He encouraged more people to register for organ donation.
Launch of New Initiatives
The event also saw the launch of NOTTO’s e-Newsletter, annual report, and a manual on Organ Transport Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
