Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel, spoke at the ‘Interactive TB Vaccines Dialogue’ event in New York. The event took place alongside the 79th United Nations General Assembly.

India’s Commitment to Eliminating TB

Patel emphasized India’s role as the chair of the Stop TB Partnership Board and reiterated the nation’s commitment to eliminating tuberculosis (TB) by 2030. She highlighted that India’s TB program has become a model for the world, showing a 16% decline in TB cases and an 18% reduction in TB deaths from 2015 to 2022.

Success of India’s TB Program

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has made significant progress in TB care and prevention. The country has expanded its infrastructure and provided financial support to patients. The National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) has disbursed $373 million to over 10 million TB patients. The program boasts a treatment success rate of 88%.

Need for Innovative TB Vaccines

Patel stressed the urgent need for new TB vaccines, noting that the current BCG vaccine’s protective effects diminish with age. She mentioned that around 16 new vaccines are in clinical trials, and highlighted India’s ongoing research and development efforts, including trials for recombinant BCG VPM1002 and Immuvac.

Global Collaboration

Patel underlined the importance of the Stop TB Partnership, which includes over 2,000 partners from various sectors, all working together to eliminate TB by 2030.
