Anil K Antony Criticizes Kerala Assembly’s Stance on ‘One Nation One Election’

In Pathanamthitta, Kerala, BJP National Secretary Anil K Antony criticized the Congress and the ruling Left Democratic Front for their resolution against the Centre’s ‘One Nation One Election’ proposal. Antony accused them of an opportunistic alliance at the national level while pretending to oppose each other in Kerala. He described the resolution as “anti-national, anti-people,” and claimed that the Kerala Assembly had lost its sense of history.

The Kerala Legislative Assembly passed a resolution opposing the central government’s push for simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies. The Assembly argued that this reform undermines India’s democratic process and disregards its social, cultural, and political diversity. The resolution expressed concerns that simultaneous elections could weaken the multi-party democratic system and centralize power, curtailing the autonomy of state governments and local bodies.

The high-level committee appointed by the central government recommended shortening the terms of state assemblies that do not complete their full tenure before the next general elections. The Kerala Assembly’s resolution stated that this would violate the democratic rights of citizens. It criticized the central government’s plan as a move towards centralized governance, driven by the RSS-BJP’s agenda to undermine federalism and democratic decentralization.

The resolution called for an immediate rollback of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, emphasizing its threat to constitutional values and democratic participation. The Union Cabinet had approved the proposal, with a report submitted by a committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, following extensive consultations and research.
