Andre Russell Becomes Top Wicket-Taker for West Indies in T20 World Cup
During the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 clash against South Africa, West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell surpassed former cricketer Dwayne Bravo to become the highest wicket-taker for the Caribbeans in the history of the T20 WC.
Russell bowled exceptionally well against South Africa, taking two wickets in his four overs while conceding only 19 runs. This brought his total wicket count in T20 World Cup history to 29, surpassing Bravo’s 27 wickets.
In the match, South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first. West Indies struggled initially but an 81-run partnership between Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase helped them reach 135/8 in 20 overs. Tabraiz Shamsi was the standout bowler for South Africa with three wickets.
Chasing a revised target of 123 runs in 17 overs due to rain, South Africa faced early setbacks but crucial contributions from Tristan Stubbs and Heinrich Klaasen kept them in the game. Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada eventually guided South Africa to victory with three wickets in hand.
With this win, South Africa remained unbeaten in the Super Eights and advanced to the semifinals. West Indies, the host nation, were eliminated after winning only one of their three matches.
