Anand Mahindra Advocates for Quality Over Quantity in Work Hours

In a recent event in New Delhi, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra shared his views on the ongoing debate about work-life balance and long working hours. Speaking at the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2025, Mahindra emphasized the importance of the quality of work over the quantity of hours worked. He expressed respect for leaders like Narayana Murthy but disagreed with the focus on long workweeks.

Mahindra argued that the output of work is more important than the number of hours spent working. He highlighted that significant achievements can be made in a short time if the work is of high quality. He also supported the idea of a four-day workweek, which some countries are experimenting with.

Mahindra stressed the importance of holistic thinking and liberal arts education in making wise decisions. He believes that exposure to arts and culture helps in better decision-making. He used the example of his auto manufacturing business to illustrate the need to understand customer needs by spending time with families.

Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, Mahindra said, "Open your windows, let the air in," to emphasize the need for diverse experiences. When asked about his own work hours, he avoided giving a specific number, reiterating that quality is what matters.

Mahindra also discussed his use of social media, stating that he uses it as a business tool rather than for socializing. He highlighted the importance of social media in business, despite not using it to make friends.
