Amritpal Singh’s Parents Urge Government to Release Him After Winning Lok Sabha Seat
Amritsar (Punjab) [India], July 5: Balwinder Kaur, the mother of jailed Khalistani separatist and Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat winner, Amritpal Singh, urged the government to release him from jail. Earlier today, Amritpal Singh was sworn in as a Member of Parliament under heavy security in the Parliament complex.
“I congratulate all the supporters…He should have also been allowed to take oath as a Lok Sabha MP in June with the other MPs. The supporters are very happy as he took oath as a Lok Sabha MP. I request the government to release him from jail,” Balwinder Kaur said.
Amritpal Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, said that the government should allow the people of Punjab to meet him once. “I congratulate all the supporters. We have not been briefed about the information that he has reached here or not (from Dibrugarh jail)… This is a matter of joy for the voters of Khadoor Sahib and Punjabis residing all over the world… There was speculation about whether he would be an MP or not, but that will come to an end today… The government should allow the people of Punjab to meet him once… He should be released unconditionally,” Tarsem Singh said.
Meanwhile, supporters of ‘Waris Punjab De’ Chief distributed sweets and offered ‘Ardas’ in a Gurdwara ahead of his oath ceremony as the Lok Sabha MP.
Jailed Amritpal Singh was escorted out of Dibrugarh jail in Assam by a team of the Punjab Police. In the recent 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Singh contested and won as an independent candidate from the Khadoor Sahib parliamentary seat in Punjab. He posted a massive margin of 1,97,120 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Kulbir Singh Zira of Congress. Singh was arrested by Punjab police in April last year, weeks after he evaded police and a stringent National Security Act was invoked against him. His parents, Tarsem Singh and Balwinder Kaur, and his wife Kirandeep Kaur, met the jailed activist in Dibrugarh Central jail last month after his Lok Sabha win. Voting for 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab was held on June 1 in the seventh phase of the Lok Sabha elections. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections took place from April 19 to June 1, in seven phases. The votes were counted and the results were declared on June 4, leading to the formation of the 18th Lok Sabha.
