Amnesty International Criticizes Sindh Government for Flood Response
In Sindh, Pakistan, Amnesty International has raised concerns over the plight of thousands affected by severe flooding and water-borne diseases. The floods in August 2024 displaced over 140,000 people, many of whom are now living in tents. Months later, these communities continue to face health risks and economic challenges with minimal support from the government or international community.
Amnesty International highlighted the Sindh government’s failure to provide essential services like healthcare, food, and housing, which violates economic, social, and cultural rights. Scott Edwards, Crisis Response Programme Director at Amnesty International, criticized the lack of action from both the Sindh government and the international community, emphasizing the urgent need to address climate change and its humanitarian impacts.
Shazia Chandio, a resident affected by the floods, shared her tragic experience of losing her son to diarrhoea, expressing frustration over the lack of assistance. Amnesty International visited eight flood-affected villages in the Badin and Dadu districts, interviewing 36 residents, including vulnerable groups. The organization called for support for those suffering due to the floods.
