Amnesty International and HRCP Condemn Violence in Bannu, Pakistan
Amnesty International has condemned the actions of Pakistani defence forces in Bannu, Pakistan, particularly focusing on a recent incident where officers opened fire on peaceful protestors. This tragic event resulted in the deaths of at least five protestors and injuries to over 20 others.
In a statement, Amnesty International’s South Asia chapter highlighted that the use of lethal force against peaceful protestors is a violation of their rights under international human rights law and Pakistan’s Constitution. They emphasized that such actions are unlawful and contradict the UN Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials.
Additionally, Amnesty International criticized the restrictions on mobile internet services in Bannu, stating that these limitations hinder people’s ability to mobilize, spread misinformation during emergencies, and create panic.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) also condemned the incident, expressing shock at the deaths and injuries caused by the security personnel’s actions. They called for immediate engagement with the protestors and accountability for those responsible for the violence.
Both organizations urged the Pakistani government to investigate the incident, hold officials accountable, and ensure that any actions to restore law and order respect the rights of those affected.
