Union Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted significant growth in sugarcane cultivation, production, and ethanol production at the Sugar Conclave and National Efficiency Award 2022-23 ceremony in New Delhi.

Growth in Sugarcane Cultivation

Shah noted that the area under sugarcane cultivation increased from 5 million hectares in 2013-14 to 6 million hectares today, marking an 18% increase. Sugarcane production rose from 352 million tonnes to 491 million tonnes, reflecting a 40% increase. Yield also saw a 19% growth, and gross sugar production recorded a 58% increase.

Boost in Ethanol Production

Shah added that ethanol production and the diversion of sugar into ethanol were initially at 0 million tonnes but have now reached 4.5 million tonnes. Ethanol derived from the sugar industry increased from 380 million liters to 3.7 billion liters, thanks to government policies promoting renewable energy.

This expansion highlights the concerted efforts by the government and the industry to enhance agricultural output and support the livelihoods of millions of farmers across the country. The shift towards ethanol has not only helped in reducing the sugar surplus but has also contributed significantly to India’s energy security.
