National Handloom Day Celebrations in New Delhi
Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended greetings on National Handloom Day, highlighting the pride, progress, and heritage of India’s handloom sector. He emphasized the government’s commitment to the prosperity of the sector through various schemes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed pride in the rich heritage and tradition of handlooms, reiterating the commitment to ‘Vocal for Local’.
The 10th National Handloom Day was celebrated at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, with Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar as the chief guest. Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh and Minister of State for External Affairs & Textiles Pabitra Margherita attended the event, along with MPs, designers, industry representatives, and over 1000 weavers.
During the event, the Sant Kabir Awards and National Handloom Awards were presented to outstanding weavers. A book titled ‘Parampara- Sustainability in Handloom Traditions of India’ was also released by the Vice President.
National Handloom Day, first celebrated on August 7, 2015, commemorates the Swadeshi Movement of 1905, which promoted indigenous industries. The day aims to honor handloom weavers and raise awareness about the sector’s importance to India’s socio-economic development.
