Amazon Alexa Helps Parents Answer Kids’ Questions, Survey Finds

New Delhi, India – A recent survey by Amazon Alexa and Kantar reveals that many parents struggle to answer their children’s questions immediately. The study, conducted in June 2024 with over 750 parents across six cities, shows that 54% of parents often find it challenging to provide instant answers.

According to the survey, 52% of parents search for accurate answers when unsure, while 44% improvise on the spot. Only 3% of parents ignore or redirect the question. This highlights parents’ efforts to engage with their children’s curiosity despite the difficulties.

The study also found that 63% of parents notice their children ask more questions while watching TV. Other activities that spark curiosity include traveling (57%), studying (56%), outdoor activities (55%), using handheld devices (52%), and listening to adult conversations (50%). Popular topics include food, animals, nature, general knowledge, holidays, technology, and movies.

Technology plays a crucial role in helping parents provide answers. Over 80% of parents use technology, with voice AI services like Amazon’s Alexa being particularly useful. Dilip RS, Country Manager for Alexa, Amazon India, stated, “When kids are feeling curious, parents can leverage Alexa to provide answers on a wide range of topics.” Families ask Alexa 25 million questions per month.

Despite the challenges, over 90% of parents encourage their children to ask more questions to support their growth and learning. Nearly 92% of parents also learn new information while answering their kids’ questions, highlighting the mutual learning process.

Deepender Rana, Executive Managing Director – South Asia, Insights Division at Kantar, emphasized the importance of screen-free learning solutions. He said, “While TV drives curiosity, many parents prefer screen-free methods for their children. Voice-first search tools like Alexa provide a valuable solution for finding answers and learning in a screen-free manner.”
