Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune Re-Elected with 94.7% Votes
Algeria’s 78-year-old President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been re-elected with a significant majority, securing 94.7% of the votes. The announcement was made by Mohamed Charfi, head of Algeria’s National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE).
Of the 5,630,000 registered voters, 5,320,000 voted for Tebboune, an independent candidate. His main challengers were Abdelaali Hassani Cherif from the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP) party, who received 3% of the votes, and Youcef Aouchiche from the Socialist Forces Front (FFS) party, who received 2.1%.
Hassani Cherif’s campaign raised concerns about voting irregularities, including pressure on polling staff and issues with vote-sorting records. However, it was not confirmed whether these alleged violations affected the election results.
ANIE aimed to ensure transparency and fair competition among all candidates. The voter turnout was reported as an average of 48%, although this figure was provisional.
Tebboune’s re-election indicates that Algeria will likely continue its current governing program, which includes increased social spending funded by higher energy revenues. Additionally, Algeria has formally applied to join the BRICS group and become a shareholder member of the BRICS Bank, with an initial contribution of USD 1.5 billion.
