Akhilesh Yadav to Lead Samajwadi Party Meeting Before First Parliament Session

The Samajwadi Party (SP), led by Akhilesh Yadav, will hold a crucial meeting of its MPs at the Parliamentary Party Office in the Parliament House in Delhi at 10 a.m. tomorrow. This meeting is scheduled before the commencement of the first Parliament session after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The meeting will focus on preparing strategies for the Parliament session and the upcoming Lok Sabha speaker poll, which is set for June 26.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab has been appointed as the pro-tem speaker. He will administer the oath to newly elected members and oversee the House proceedings. This decision has been criticized by Congress, which argues that the appointment deviates from the traditional practice of appointing the senior-most member.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that President Droupadi Murmu appointed Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro-tem Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha. President Murmu also appointed Suresh Kodikunnil, Thalikkottai Rajuthevar Baalu, Radha Mohan Singh, Faggan Singh Kulaste, and Sudip Bandyopadhyay to assist the Speaker Pro-tem in the oath-taking of newly-elected members.

This is the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha post the general elections, which saw the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) winning 293 seats and the INDIA bloc securing 234 seats. The Rajya Sabha session will begin on June 27.
