Akhilesh Yadav Criticizes UP Government Over Bahraich Encounter

In Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav criticized the state government for its handling of the Bahraich encounter. He accused the government of using encounters to hide its failures, stating, “This incident was an administrative failure. If encounters were truly improving law and order, Uttar Pradesh would be far ahead of other states.”

Yadav questioned the state’s ability to maintain law and order, asking why a permitted procession wasn’t conducted peacefully. He accused the government of orchestrating the incident and following a divide-and-rule policy. “What happened was unfortunate, and such incidents should not recur. We will stand by the families of the victims and ensure they receive justice,” he added.

The incident involved the shooting of Sarfaraz and Mohammad Talib by the police as they allegedly tried to flee to Nepal. Uttar Pradesh DGP Prashant Kumar stated that two of the five arrested in connection with the violence were injured during the encounter, while three others were taken into custody. He assured that the situation is now under control.

Congress also criticized the government, with UP Congress President Ajay Rai calling the encounters fake and an attempt to cover up failures. SP Bahraich, Vrinda Shukla, explained that the police acted in self-defense when the suspects fired at them. The suspects are now in custody, and a search is underway for others involved.

The violence erupted during a Durga idol immersion procession in Bahraich, resulting in the death of Ramgopal Mishra and injuries to several others.
