Akhilesh Yadav Criticizes BJP Over Shop Name Directive During Kanwar Yatra

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for a directive issued by the Uttar Pradesh government. The directive requires shop owners to display their names outside their shops. Yadav claimed this was done to protect their positions.

The Supreme Court has put an interim stay on this directive. A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti stated that shopkeepers should only be required to display the food items they sell, not their names. The court has scheduled a hearing on the matter for July 26.

The directive was challenged by several petitioners, including Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra, the Association for Protection of Civil Rights, Delhi University Professor Apoorvanand, and activist Aakar Patel. They argued that the directive caused religious discrimination and questioned the authority behind it.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Mahua Moitra, noted that Kanwar Yatras have been happening for decades with support from people of all religions, including Muslims, Christians, and Buddhists.
