Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], September 19: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative. He questioned the BJP’s intention to save expenses, pointing out the numerous rallies conducted by the party. Yadav suggested that the BJP might eventually question the need for the Election Commission, citing the expenses on its officers.

Yadav stated, “After the One Nation, One Election is implemented, they will point out that there is no need for the Election Commission and that a lot of money is spent on the EC officers. If One Nation, One Election gets implemented, officers and workers will be brought through lateral entry, and they will be outsourced. If they really want to save the expenses, why does BJP conduct so many rallies?”

Other opposition leaders also voiced their concerns. Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh accused the BJP of running fake propaganda to evade accountability, calling it a party of ‘one nation, one corruption’ and ‘one nation, one commission’. Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar claimed that the government wanted to eliminate regional parties.

The Cabinet approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, which aims to hold simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections, along with urban body and panchayat polls within 100 days. A High-level Committee on Simultaneous Elections, led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, submitted its report to President Droupadi Murmu earlier this year. The report, consisting of 18,626 pages, was the result of extensive consultations and research over 191 days since its formation on September 2, 2023.
