Akhilesh Yadav and Keshav Prasad Maurya’s War of Words in Uttar Pradesh

On Friday, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav called Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya a ‘Mohra’ (pawn). In response, Maurya called Yadav the ‘Mohra’ of the Congress party and suggested he should focus on saving SP from ‘extinction’.

Akhilesh Yadav’s Remarks

During a press conference, Yadav criticized the BJP, saying, ‘They have spoiled every system. Every system and every department has been ruined… I heard that (Keshav Prasad) Maurya ji is ‘Mohra’. He is the password of Delhi’s WiFi. Tell me, will the government run like this?… UP will not run like this. They have cheated the people of UP.’

Keshav Prasad Maurya’s Response

In a post on X, Maurya hit back, calling Yadav the ‘Mohra’ of the Congress party. He said, ‘The brave SP leader, Akhilesh Yadav, who has become a Mohra of the Congress, is harbouring misunderstandings about the BJP. Instead of targeting and insulting the backward sections, focus on saving SP from extinction.’

Maurya expressed confidence that the BJP would repeat its 2017 state assembly election success in 2027 and form the ‘Lotus’ government again.

Further Exchanges

Reacting to Maurya’s ‘Mohra’ remarks, Yadav said, ‘We are Samajwadi Mohre. We are Mohre of the poor.’

Yadav also unveiled the ‘Samvidhan Manastambh’ at the SP headquarters in Lucknow, which houses a copy of the Constitution.

Monsoon Offer and Reactions

Earlier, on July 18, Yadav announced a ‘Monsoon Offer’ on X, asking dissidents to bring a hundred MLAs and form the government in Uttar Pradesh. Maurya dismissed this as ‘Mungerilal ke haseen sapne’ (a 1989 TV show on a daydreamer Mungerilal), saying the public and karyakartas would ‘wrap up the Monsoon Offer at 47’ in 2027.

In the 2017 state assembly elections, the SP won only 47 seats, while the BJP won 312 seats with over 40% vote share. The next elections for the 403-member Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly will be held in 2027.
