Ajit Pawar and Yugendra Pawar Face Off in Baramati Assembly Election

In Pune, Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister and leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is set to file his nomination for the Baramati assembly seat. His nephew, Yugendra Pawar, who is also the grandson of NCP founder Sharad Pawar, is contesting from the same constituency as an NCP-SP candidate.

This election marks another ‘Pawar versus Pawar’ contest in Baramati, following the Lok Sabha elections where Supriya Sule, Sharad Pawar’s daughter, defeated Sunetra Pawar, Ajit Pawar’s wife. Ajit Pawar had split the NCP in June 2023.

Yugendra Pawar expressed his sadness over the family contest, stating, “I feel it is quite sad, quite unfortunate that this had to come in the family.” He emphasized the importance of staying with Sharad Pawar, the party’s founder and family patriarch, for the prosperity of Baramati and its surroundings.

Yugendra Pawar acknowledged the challenge of running against his uncle, saying, “I don’t think it will be tough but I don’t even think that it will be easy either.” He noted that the people of Baramati have shown strong support for Sharad Pawar in past elections.

The Maharashtra Assembly elections are scheduled for November 20, with results for all 288 constituencies to be announced on November 23. In the previous elections, the BJP, Shiv Sena, and Congress secured significant numbers of seats.
