Ajit Doval Leads India at BIMSTEC Meeting in Myanmar

On July 26, in Naypyitaw, Myanmar, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval spoke at the 4th Annual Meeting of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Security Chiefs. Doval emphasized the importance of cooperation in counter-terrorism and combating drug trafficking.

As the leader of the Indian delegation, Doval delivered India’s national statement, highlighting the need for collaboration in counter-terrorism, drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and organized crime. He also discussed BIMSTEC connectivity, the 2nd Ports Conclave, and water security of Himalayan river systems.

In a post on X, the Indian embassy in Myanmar shared, “NSA delivered India’s national statement at #BIMSTEC meet. He spoke on strengthening cooperation in counter-terrorism; combating drug trafficking, arms smuggling and organized crime; BIMSTEC connectivity; holding 2nd Ports Conclave; and water security of Himalayan river systems.”

Doval also met with Myanmar’s National Security Advisor Admiral Moe Aung and the BIMSTEC Security Chiefs called on Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

On Thursday, India took the lead in security sector collaboration within BIMSTEC, marking a significant step towards enhancing regional security cooperation. This was highlighted during the Senior Officials Meeting in Naypyitaw, which aimed to strategize and coordinate initiatives to address common security challenges faced by member states.

BIMSTEC is a multilateral group that promotes economic cooperation and regional connectivity among seven countries in the Bay of Bengal region. India is a founding member of this initiative.
